Nowadays, ICTs are sufficiently mature and solid to support ubiquitous, accessible-to-all and situated learning processes. With respect to the aforementioned consideration, it is needed to investigate three promising fields (Ubiquitous Learning, Massive and Smart Learning Environments) of Technology Enhanced Learning which are focus of numerous researchers, practitioners and developers. These fields partially overlap, in a sense that, for instance, solutions provided for Ubiquitous Learning can be adopted in Smart Learning Environments or, moreover, Massive on line Learning systems, if opportunely integrated in larger technological environments could provide effective solutions for Ubiquitous Learning scenarios. Also, issues like, for instance, interoperability, integration, knowledge extraction, etc. are common for all the above fields and can be challenged by means of Semantic Technologies and Computational Intelligence approaches.
Ubiquitous Learning allows a person to learn anytime and anywhere, in seamless way, thus it is considered as the next generation e-learning. Ubiquitous Learning potentially overcomes the limitations of e-learning by building seamless experiences that are not subject to the constraints of space and time and exploit context and situation awareness to improve the learning process. Seamless learning is “a learning style where a learner can learn in a variety of scenarios and in which they can switch from one scenario or context (such as formal and informal learning, personal and social learning, etc.) to another easily and quickly, with the personal device as a mediator” (Wong, 2012, p. 19).
MOOCs (massive open online courses) are, typically, free courses deployed over the Web, that are away from the traditional classrooms and support a huge number of enrolled students (even thousands of students per course). In successful MOOCs, we can find authentic strong communities, including learners who desire to master content and instructors (teachers, tutors, coaches, etc.) who help learners to succeed in their challenges.
Smart Learning Environments represent a new frontier for educational systems which aim at achieving the effective synergy among pedagogy, technology and their fusion in order to improve learning processes. A learning environment can be considered smart when the learner is supported, for instance, by “adaptive” and “intelligent” technologies which follow the learner from childhood to their adult life, at work, through formal and informal learning activities. Among the most important features of a smart learning environment it is important to underline that it offers a high degree of autonomy, adapts itself when context changes, and communicates with learners by means of natural interfaces. Intelligent, context-aware and semantic technologies are able to reduce the amount of interaction required by the learners.
The main goal of this issue is to bring together contributions from researchers and practitioners who are interested in addressing issues and challenges related to Ubiquitous Learning, Massive and Smart Learning Environments mostly by leveraging on Semantic Technologies and Computational Intelligence techniques. Interdisciplinary works (e.g. fusion of pedagogies and technologies), theoretical papers and papers describing practical experiences (also in designing and developing systems and applications) will be welcome.

The Journal of e-Learning and Knowledge Society (Je-LKS) (eISSN 1971-8829) is published by the Italian Society of e-Learning since 2005 and in 2014 has published its tenth volume, consisting of three numbers (their output is four months). Je-LKS is indexed, among other things, on AACE-EdITLib, Scopus, Elsevier, DOAJ, Citefactor, IET-Inspec and in 2014 reached an h-index of 15 (Publish or Perish based on Google Scholar Database).
